Japan has a shortage of farmland with only 20% of its land used for cultivation.

Rice paddies occupies most of the countryside.

On some terraces and lower slopes, wheat and barley are planted in autumn.

Sweet potatoes, vegetables and dry rice are planted in summer.

Crops are alternated with beans and peas.
